Exchange 2000: Partitions Vs Volumes

We are plannning to upgrade from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000. Some people suggested to use the volumes mounted to some directory instead of partitions for Exchange databse storage.

for example–
instead of “E:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata\priv1.edb” use “C:\mnt\group1-data1\mdbdata”. In this example group1-data1(on a volume) is the store path mounted to c:\mnt.

What is the advantage in using volumes instead of simple partitions ?
