I have a client that has Small Business Server 2000 installed and they are using the Exchange 2000 to route internal email to each other using Outlook clients and they let their ISP be the gateway to send and receive external email by settingup the same Outlook client to access the external ISP accounts.
Now to the problem or if is even a problem, but it is annoying to them.
When they send email to external email addresses they seem to always get an email back from the Exchange server with the subject as:
“Delivery Status Notification (Delay)”
And the message reads:
“This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.”
“THIS IS A WARNING MESSAGE ONLY”
“YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESEND YOUR MESSAGE”
“Delivery to the following recipients has been delayed.”

Is this something to worry about? Is there away to turn it off so that the users don’t keep getting this message or could you re-direct all these messages to the administrators email account instead?
Also, if the Outlook client is configured to use the ISP gateway to send external emails why is Exchange 2000 even sending these messages to the users? BTW the external emails do seem to be going to their recipients.
My only thought is that the messages are also routed to the Exchange 2000 server when they send an external email because the Outlook client is also used to send email internal to each other and Exchange 2000 being the internal routing service for them is some how grabbing all emails first and then throwing it back to the Outlook client which then sends it out correctly. Am I wrong? Please help and Thanks.
