internet explorer crashes win2k!

Why does IE crash evry time I try to download a program? I have a high speed internet cable connection, it browses great, but it crashes every time, it says ie has experienced an error and will now close, thenit asks me if I want to send a report, and I do, then it says they have no solution for my problem, to download ie6.0 and still get the same error.i delete cookies and offline temp internet files in the internet options.is this some sort of bug or virus in IE 6.0? and how can i stop it?
