Find the week day of a date in Perl

Input is a day of a month: example 3/1/2003.
How to get the week day of that input in Perl script language? Example: the week day of 3/1/2003 is Saturday.
What is the syntax of the parameter:timeFormat of
localtime(timeFormat) function ?
