font formats, ideas

Hello,

I’ve often been frustrated with “script” fonts that try to look
handwritten. I know I’m tipping my hand with respect to my mental
state here but, it’s turned into a sort of mania, where when I see one,
I immediately start checking all the characters. Yep. All the a’s are
the same, all the capitol c’s etc… What else would I expect right?
That’s the way all of the font formats are designed. It seems a pity.
There are some very expressive (impressive) fonts out there, that lose
their punch when all the characters are repeated over and over again.
Especially the script, felt pens, etc..loaded on every computer–you
know, the ones that are meant to look really hand written –I mean
there are quite a few programs, even web sites available to put your
own handwriting in font form. My point is, who would bother with
any of it when the end product looks computer crafted anyway. Too
perfect–nobody writes that way.

So my question(idea) is — Is any one still listening?– Does a font
format exsist that will provide for a choice of multiple characters?
That would work like, for example, I hit a key, and the computer
chooses randomly from 5 or 6 samples of that character in the font
memory. Probably not. Or perhaps, a font format that is capable of
running simulteaneously with a number of others, switching
randomly between complete font sets that are very similar yet
different enough to provide tiny variations so as to make script fonts
look like script.

Thanks,

JP
