Format Dates in Excel

Here is my problem. I have several cells that I’ve formatted to be in this date format: 10/02/2003. Problem is when I type in 100203 the Cell formats to 5/5/74. Why does it not format to 10/02/2003? I know I can manually type in the date with the correct format but shouldn’t Excel do this automatically? Hope someone can help.
