Freecell won’t start

Running Windows 98, I launch Freecell and the title bar reads gibberish instead of “Freecell”. Also the cursor remains an hourglass while over the playing area. I can click the File menu and select New Game. The playing area fills with cards, but the cursor never changes from the hourglass and I can never play. I once had a conflict with Internet Explorer, but got it resolved. My current version of IE is 5.5.
