garbled emails via pdf’s

When receiving a PDF via an email from someone outside the company or trying to send a PDF from within the company to another email account, the text becomes garbled. Sending and receiving word documents, excel files they open fine. Only PDF’s appear garbled. Anyone come across this? It’s obviously an issue with something within the company that may or may not have been implemented with the new year. Never had these issues before the new year!
