hardrive

I am attempting to extract files from a seperate hardrive that is password protected, i have the password but am unable to do anything with the hardrive as windows xp will not allow me to enter it as either a primary single hardrive or as a slave in my computer, is there any software i can use? or any tips will be appreciated.
