Help with symbols in Word

When ever I try to insert a symbol in Word nothing happens. I received information that it might be the TweakUI which was not installed, so I installed it and disable the x-mouse feature nothing has helped.I even uninstalled Office completely and then reinstalled with not luck please Help!! I running XP with all the updates and Office 2003.
