Yeah see i guess what i have in mind is to use FreeBSD, Ubuntu, or Debian (havnt chose yet) as a learning instrument, and to run my applications which include: Microsoft Office (OpenOffice), TV viewing/recording software, aim/gaim, various little apps, and of course Video games!. As you can see im a gamer and this pc is a gaming pc which i have built specifically for gaming. I already have about 2 years of expeience with Linux so i knowmy way around. Still have trouble with the file system. Its so confusing with all the 3 letter folders. And then theres the language. I REALLY hope to use Linux one day as my primary OS. I LOVE to play video games! I am a true gamer and i hear Linux puts out more FPS when it comes to video games. I dont think ill ever be a programmer, or really even an IT guy at all. But i love computers and i use them so much i want to learn as much as i can about them.

There is a problem though. I do know that many games are created around DirectX. Linux uses opengl for graphics rendering. Im pretty sure every game has the ability to run on opengl and apparently opengl has more features and better performance. But this is a WINE thing. I had a real hard time with WINE last time. Im pretty sure you pretty much run things simple by typing WINE “directory”. And that was alittle annoying only a few programs didnt work. I was using ubuntu at the time. I figure because i will be playing so many video games i will need WINE. Unless imlucky enough that the game has a seperate installlation wizard for Linux.

Im also wondering what the best GUI (graphical user inerface) is for a linux operating system. What would you suggest? Ive herd of KDE, GNome, and some others i dont know at the top of my head. Preference im sure, but what do YOU think is the best. Why do YOU like it, and what do YOU use it for?

Untill that day comes when i swtich fully to Linux, which may very well not come, i will have my pc dual booted with whichever Linux OS i choose, and Windows X64. Im getting ready for the 64bit applications! 🙂

Im sure you all know by now what my system has but heres a brief description just in case: AMD64, 1GB RAM, ati x1950, 160gb HDD.

But then again, would you recommend Linux to a gamer? Or should i stick with dual booting?

I know this is alot to ask i guess, but being in this community for a while i realise how incredibly smart all of you are and am confident you can help me. This is very important to me. Thank you.

Acheron
