How do I embed graphics in HTML emails?

I wish to send HTML emails including graphics to some of our clients. I have noticed that we receive 2 different types – one where we need an active internet connection to view the graphic and the other where the graphic seems to be delivered with the email (as an attachment).

It is this second type that interests me. Can anyone advise on how this is done?
