Insert Object from file (Office 2003)

I am able to insert an object in Word 2003, using create from file (Excel file), but receive an error message when trying to manipulate the object, RE unable to start the application. Choice to repair the feature does not resolve the issue. Running XP SP2, and tried office updates/detect repair. Older word docs with excel objects are fine.
