Internet Explorer problem

Hi- I’m still having a problem trying to figure out how to download IE-6 completely. I removed IE-7 from ADD& REMOVE but when I downloaded IE-6 and was told to “reboot” I then get a notice of -unable to complete download as I have a later version installed. I tried following one tech’s advice but to no avail-can ANYONE give me some advice. I had Windows XP.
