Is DSUM what I want or need?

Hello,
I am trying to get a database that keeps a running month to date total of sales for each month. I have seen the help file on DSUM and I think that maybe this is the way to go, but I can’t sift through the technoese to be sure. Is there a concrete example of DSUM or is there an easier way to do this.
