Laptop VGA to DVI LCD

I would like to use a LCD monitor with my laptop/docking station setup. I got a Hanns G JW199D monitor and when I connected the laptop’s VGA output to the LCD’s VGA input with the supplied cable I find that the text is not sharp enough for daily work. I found on the internet a VGA-DVI scaler that costs $300 !!! Is there another option? Cheaper converters, video drivers, etc.?
