Link Access DB to Excel Spreadsheet that’s open by another user

by jeff.troutman . Updated 19 years, 6 months ago

Hi all,
I’m using Office ’03 and am trying to link an Access DB to an Excel spreadsheet. The problem is that if the spreadsheet is opened by another user and I attempt to access the spreadsheet via the linked “table” I receive “The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file ‘…’ It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data.”

If I go directly to the spreadsheet I’m told the file is locked for editing but I can select read-only and view the contents without a problem. If no one else is viewing the Excel sheet Access doesn’t have any problems.

How can I either prevent Excel from locking this file or have Access open in read-only mode (although I understand Access links to Excel are always read-only by design anyways).

Thanks in advance!
Jeff
