Looking for Open Source Games recomendations

I am in the process of building a community site around SMF for my extended family. Pretty far along and so far so good with SMF. Over the past ten years I have used a number of others, but really like this from the open source world.

I would like to get some recommendations for an open-source, server-side, games. I am thinking of some kind of RPG or MUD/MOO. PHP/MySQL under the hood would be bonus points.

I host on TCH which offers Apache, PHP, MySQL so the field is pretty open. Checked on Source Forge and they have over 10,000 games projects listed. Am hoping someone will make some suggestions about what I should try first.
