Mac won’t open .doc attachments from PC

Our office sends news releases to the local newspaper that are saved as Word “.docs”. The staff at the newspaper is using a Mac, and they are unable to open the documents for publication. They have told us to save as .txt files – then they can access them. Is there a simpler answer? Thanks!
