Macros in Excel XP

My company uses macros in Excel which automatically refresh upon the opening of the program. Usually these files which have the macros are large in length, and the update can take quite some time. How do we disable these macros so that the user can refresh them when they want, and the updates everytime Excel is started? Any help at all would be most greatful.
