Mailmerge word 2002 – Access 2002

OS = Windows XP Pro
Office = XP Pro
word hangs during a mail merge creation when trying to access the 2002 database.
Other backdoor attempts have given the error “Word was unable to open the data source”
Database is stored on a network server.
any help to solve this problem would be appreciated.
