Messages don’t show in Outlook Express

I have a customer with an XP Home computer who has a problem I have never seen before. In Outlook Express, all of the emails appear to be blank. The folders containing the messages do seem to hold data, and the computer seems to be virus-free. Any suggestions as to what could be causing this?
