Microsoft Access 2002 can grow field

I can not get my field to grow in my access 2002 report even though the can grow field property is set to yes. My report runs off a query. The field is being limited to 255 charcters, related to a text field, however mine is a memo field and should be able to show 65K characters. If the report runs off a table, then the field works fine, its only when I use the query does my field get truncated. I am interested in the filter property but have not been successful on using that option either.
