MS Outlook on XP Pro

I am using xp pro with microsoft outlook and MS Exchange ver 5.5. I have about 500 MB of mails. everytime I click on the inbox, a window appears saying “outlook is trying to retrieve mails from the server” If I click ok it continues and on cancel the whloe of Outlook closes.

Please assist in resolving this issue
