MS Word 2000: not able to view document

My Laptop is not able to boot properly. Only way I can transfer my data is using “safe mode with network connection”. I can copy my word files from my laptop to anther coputer, but I can’t view it on the computer which has MS word 2000. word screen gives me funny characters. How do I view my word files. I copied zip file which has MS word documents in them that I was able to view just fine.
