MS Word 97 Fault

Any document saved in Word 97,on the pc in question, and then closed and reopened has the following characters on a line at the top of the document:
bjbjt+t+
The documents are corrupted and have many added lines containing path info & formatting info etc.
What could have caused this problem?
This problem also affects existing documents.
