MS-Word file reading problem

sir!
i have win98 and 0ffice97 i did create a file and save it as .DOC but after a while i opened it but it open in different character like as “boxs and special characters” i cane read this file i did check it into different format,office xp ,office 2003 version and unicod but is still same.
sir pls solve this problem
