MS Word pauses

While typing the user experiences pauses in MS Word, i.e. they are typing and look up at the screen and see that the typed letters have stopped appearing. Sometimes after waiting a couple of minutes things resume. Other times waiting 30 minutes produces no progress. If one goes to the task manager, Word is listed as running. Any one encounter this?
