Need a macro to attach template to norma

Our users download a write-protected normal.dot from a network drive. They keep an autotext.dot template in their personal network drive for autotext, which they have to attach manually. Any macro I try to write in the normal.dot to attach this other template when they log in does not work. Any ideas how I can accomplish this?
