Need suggested email client for…

…a school of 200 kids with a Linux/Sendmail server. The students have access to approx. 50 machines across three labs, so I would like them to be able to check their mail anywhere. The clients run Windows 98 on a Win NT 4.0 domain. Students have their own user names and passwords, but not individual profiles (all desktops are uniform).

I’ve been told Outlook could do this, but would like to avoid Outlook if possible due to security concerns.
