Normal.dot email problem

When sending emails with Word/Excel attachments to another email system the attachment is being displayed as a normal.dot file. Both users are using the same email client to read their emails ie Outlook 2000 SR – 1. Have tried sending the emails in different file formats ie text and html because apparently rich text format can sometimes cause a problem. Everything seems to be as it should but the problem is still there. Can anybody help?
