Norton Antivirus/firewall constantly pop

I’m running Norton Internet Security 2003. Since I installed it, I’m getting bombarded with tons of it’s alert messages.

How do I know what to Block or Permit. Is there some general guidelines someone could give me?

Samples of errors requests are echo requests (I guess that’s my internet provider), Backdoor/Sub seven trojan virus, ICMP address, and 3 other addresses I don’t recognize.
I’m running Windows ME, have 256 mem, a 30 gig drive that’s got 17 gigs free (no partition).
