Norton Personal Firewall up-date

I have Norton firewall 2003. This morning I got an up-date, and my whole computer froze up. The internet didn’t work or anything. I had to un-install the firewall. I re-installed, got the latest up-date, and the same thing happened. Un-installed again, re-installed. This time I didn’t go for the up-date. Now everything works again. Does anyone know what happened? I guess some firewall is better than none. Thanks for any help.
