Norton SpeedDisk problems

Win98 system. When running Norton SpeedDisk the system hangs completely…no error messages and requires reboot. This problem has recently introduced itself on this system. If Windows “defrag” is used instead this will run up to app 30% and then hang in exactly the same way. The system is otherwise running ok.
Any ideas?
