Office 97 in Windows 2000 Pro

When a document icon (Word doc or Excel sheet) is opened, Word/Excel gives me a message saying that the file is already opened by another user. It will then ask me to save a copy of this file even though I am the only user opening the file. How can I fix this or prevent this from happening?
