Office 97 word shortcut points to excel

In office the Word shortcut opens Excel. The properties dialog box won’t accept the correct entry, WINWORD.EXE. If deleted and reinstalled the first time word is opened, office assistant appears. Closing office assistant closes the application and will not open as word but now points to Excel.
