Opening of files slow

When trying to open word or excel 2000 from explorer or as an email attachment, the process is very very slow, PC nearly hangs, eventually opening the file. Opening directly from the native application, it opens fast. All other file formats (txt, pdf, pps, etc) open normal from explorer or as an attachment.
