Outlook 2003 Inbox loop

I have a user and in Outlook 2003 when you click on the inbox folder in the tree you get presented with Inbox and delected item folders. again if you click on the inbox you get another inbox and deleted items folder. This goes on for as long as I keep trying, so I end up with inbox/inbox/inbox/inbox…….. etc

What has happened?
