outlook causes word to crash

I do not have all the information on this problem but i have most of it.

A person ask my team to install office 2003 on his computer that has windows xp and had office xp intalled my team installed office all was fine until the person imported his old pts file from office xp and set word as the default email editor, word every 1-5 minutes would shutdown. my team then reformated his drive installed win xp again then office 2003 then sp2 but the problems still was there then we removed the pts file the problem did not exist.
we know it has to be with the pts file but we are not sure about it.
