Outlook Express deletes emails from Inbo

Need solution to problem when Outlook Express generates an unknown error after retrieving emails from our pop3 server. If you click a message and the error pops up you can only accept the error and when returning to Inbox all read or unread messages in the inbox have vanished. O/S is 2000 Professional, Outlook Express is version 6.
