Outlook , sorting by category

Data imported from excel comes into outlook and appears fine, but when I try to sort it by category it makes new categories and adds them together. It does not maintain the integrity of the data and categories from excel. This only occurs if there are multiple categories in the excel data.
Does anyone know a fix or workaround for this problem?
