passwd quit working for MSWord on Novel

On a client Pc on a Novell network running win98, I have created a password for a file using MSword. Trying to open the file at a later time, I have found the pass not working. This has happened on a couple of occasions. How can I get these files back? Anyone explain why my pass stops working? Would really appreciate help
