Pasted text comes out as a bitmap in MS Word 2000

Every time I try to paste text copied from another source like notepad or anything it is pasted as a bitmip in MS Word 2000. The only options in psate special are to paste as bitmaps also. It’s got to be a setting somewhere but I can’t find it. Has anyone seen this before and how do I set it back to normal. THANKS
