Picture It Problems

When I save pictures using Mictosoft Picture It! and my scanner, a Visioneer 6200, the size of the files usually are 1200kb. I understand that this too large for a picture file. How can I reduce the size (the number of kb) of the file and still maintain true integrity of the picture?
