.pl extension with netscape 7.0

Getting some downloaded files with a .pl extension
on my nescape 7.0 browser. If I rename file from
****.exe.pl to ****.exe the program will execute
ok but otherwise it opens in Word with a bunch of
programing info, have since found found out that this
relates to Perl Script but do not know how or why it affects my downloads
