pop server timing out

All of a sudden having 32 messages to download it says on message 6 that the server has timed out….I’ve tried incresing the timed out lentgh but to no avail.nothing has changed on my PC and I am the only one to use it.it is outlook express 6 on win98 sec edition.
Any ideas would gratefully accepted.
