POP3 encountered error

My company’s Exchange 5.5 is running on NT4 SP6a with POP enabled. I came across the following in the event viewer application log:

POP3 connection to x.x.x.x lost
Microsoft Exchange POP3 Server encountered error 0x40 sending response to the client

Can anyone tell me what has caused this and how to remedy this ?
