Quitting my consulting work – can I cash out?

Hi folks,
I’m looking for some feedback on my career. I know from previous discussion threads that a few of you are in the same boat and have some great insight.

Here’s my situation, I have a full time job and perform consulting work on the side. I’m want to get out of my consulting work but want to do it the right way.

My day job is more of a project manager and quality control position while the side work I do is typical small business break/fix, networking stuff. I used to be able to handle the side work around my current job (mornings, lunch time, after work).

The problem is that the consulting work has grown to where it interferes with my day job. It also has been steadily creeping into my family life. Although I will miss the extra money I feel that there are other things more important to do with my time.

So my dilemma is how to go about shutting things down. I’d like to find another company to take over my clients and somehow get a finders fee or some type of commission. I have about a dozen small businesses in Manhattan and Northern NJ. I don’t have service contracts with them, so there would have to be some type of hand-off or transition to make sure the client does not jump ship. Since I’ve made over $25,000 gross in 2005 and again in 2006, I’d hate to walk away with nothing.

So have any of you gotten out of the game? Were you able to make any money on the way out?
Thanks in advance for the feedback.
