Range selection locked on.

Running XP Pro, SR2 Office 2000. XL opens and first click begins range selection. No matter what I do I cannot end the process. Cannot open any menu selections, no right clicks, nothing. Invoking ctrl alt del and terminating application takes 3 times or more to work. Have repaired install. Any suggestions.
