Repurposing Adobe PDF content to .doc

I have tried to save Adobe PDF documents to other formats like Word. I have save the doc to RTF and then imported it to Word. The doc looks like it is all in code. Does anyone know an easier way of repurposing Adobe PDF content to Word or Excel?
